So we’ve been working hard to release a small gift to all of our beta testers who’ve been extremely helpful over the past few months, and we’re very pleased to announce:
Flickchart for iPhone - http://iphone.flickchart.com
For those of you lucky enough to have an iPhone 3G (or the original iPhone), you now have a great way to get in some of those extra rankings while you’re waiting in the queue lines to see The Dark Knight, or during the agonizingly long 30 minutes of commercials playing before the movie starts.
This is a work-in-progress, but the core ranking functionality and the ability to view your top 20, as well as the global charts, are all in place.
We’ll be adding more features to this in the future while we also continue to dig in to all of the great suggestions you’ve been providing us on our Get Satisfaction page, and through your many excellent emails.
We hope you enjoy Flickchart for iPhone, and as always, please let us know what you think.
Battle Satan and Terrorists with Wii Tennis!
by Joey on Jul.18, 2008, under Green Banannas
Last night I had a wonderful time with my friends as we enjoyed yet another G.O.A.T.S.E. or ‘Greater Orlando Area Tavern Socialites Event’. During our event I ate some delicious chicken strips which I immediately regretted. You see, even though chicken strips are crispy and delicious they are still filled with the raw power of Satan and eating them only admits that the terrorists have won.
Below is a video of me playing some Wii Tennis. It’s sort of my own personal F. U. to both Satan and those crazy chicken strip endorsing terrorists.

Joey plus Firestone equals bathroom?
by Joey on Jul.10, 2008, under When I Think Outloud
The story that I am about to share is not only true but mildly disturbing. If you have children please return them to where ever the hell children came from. If you have pets or an elderly house guest please euthanize them immediately.
Now on to the show.
Most of us know what it’s like to attend a public school and the same group of people are most likely also familiar with the bathroom situations in these lovely institutions. If not, allow me to explain. School bathrooms are gross, the locks on the doors never work, the toilet paper is one ply and what the hell is up with those T.P. holders without the rolling spindle? I don’t think I need to go into detail in regards to the amount of urine and feces that someone poorly placed on either the floor or stall wall.
Based on the information above I’m sure you are not surprised to find out that I never used these public wastelands for making my number twos. What I would do instead is hold it all day until I got home, or at least close to home.
Now this is where the story gets weird.
Once my big yellow school bus would drop me off at my buss stop which was only about a quarter mile from my house I would walk to a local Firestone and begin making my magic chocolate treats. To this day I don’t understand my reasoning behind choosing a tire store over my own bathroom which was a bout five minutes away.
Now, of course I think the situation is completely absurd and somewhat hilarious but what did the Firestone employees think about it.
Imagine yourself working at Firestone and every day some random fifteen year old kid with long hair, a Metallica t-shirt and ripped jeans comes in, pretends to look at tires and then takes a dump in your store bathroom for a good twenty minutes. Some people such as maybe poo fiends or pedophiles would say that rocks, but it would probably make me question my life and the lives of other around me to the point that I would just stop pooping and learn how to pee chocolate milk.
Well, that’s all the time I have for todays episode of “Hope my poop didn’t throw you through a loop”. Until next time may your bowel movements be satisfying and your heart be full of joy.
To ride the Rails or not? That is the question.
by Joey on Jul.08, 2008, under When I Think Outloud
I’m the kind of person that gets really excited about things that my friends are super excited about. I’m sure I’m not the only one who possesses this trait and I don’t see anything wrong with it. We all enjoy sharing experiences with other people and exchanging knowledge with our fellow earth monkeys.
I recently picked up a copy of Agile Web Development with Rails as I have a few pals that are super gung-ho when it comes to both the Rails framework and the Ruby language. I’ve sat down full of excitement several times to read this book and always end up with the same inner ramblings doing that cool breakdance head spin deal in my head.
“As a .Net developer, should I really take time to learn this new technology?”
“Sure the Rails framework is open source but so is mono and I already know C#.”
“Rails does all that cool scafolding stuff I keep hearing about, builds out front end forms for CRUD operations and follows that sexy MVC pattern of develpment. Of course so will the .Net framework in a few months when the next service pack is released. The .Net service pack will even include some fancy URL rewrite moduals which is going to be awesome”.
So my question to you, the reader is simply this. Based on the informatin above, should I continue to persue Rails as an alternate application development framework or just stick with what I already know and move on with life as I know it?
P.S.
You should read this blog because well known authors do.
if(joeyGreen is Earthling) joeyGreen as Human; Introducing my new friends ‘is’ and ‘as’.
by Joey on Jul.07, 2008, under Application Development
There are two C# operators I probably should have known about a couple of years ago that have recently come to my attention.
I would like to introduce you to my new friends ‘is’ and ‘as’.
I’m sure most normal C# developers are already familiar with these two lads but I am not in that group of smart peeps and feel that it’s my responsability to share my new knowledge with the rest of the slow geeks out there.
I first saw the ‘as’ operator being used in my Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query book and sort of assumed it was new as of the .Net 3.0 framework as I had never heard of it. Shortly after that I noticed the use of ‘is’ and ‘as’ in some code here at work which prompted me to ask a coworker how long they had been around. Apparently both of these operators have existed since .Net 1.1
According to the MSDN documentation, “is Checks if an object is compatible with a given type. An is expression evaluates to true if the provided expression is non-null, and the provided object can be cast to the provided type without causing an exception to be thrown.”
Very simple and super useful for checking object types prior to casting them.
For more information go to:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/scekt9xw(VS.85).aspx
Now on to my new pal ‘as’.
The Gods of MSDN say that “as is used to perform conversions between compatible reference types. The as operator is like a cast except that it yields null on conversion failure instead of raising an exception.”
For more information go to:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cscsdfbt(VS.85).aspx
I really love these operators and methods that actually return a value you can check as opposed to just causing your application to hurl exceptions all over the place.
One of my other new favorite methods that deserves a shout-out here is the LINQ SingleOrDefault() method which returns null if a record is not returned by your query. One thing to keep in mind though with SingleOrDefault(), it will throw an exception if more than one record is returned.
Thats all I have for this episode of “Hey I get paid even though I don’t know what I’m doing.”
Join me next week when we go over HTML, whatever the fuck that is.
Skateboarding Goal
by Joey on Jul.04, 2008, under When I Think Outloud
I’m thinking about making it a goal of mine to learn a new skatboard trick each week or maybe every two weeks. I was recently watching some videos of my brother in law type person; Paul Hurtado and realized how much I still love skating. The problem is, I haven’t gone skating in years. I don’t really have any excuses as to why I haven’t skated in so long besides just plain lazyness. I have a deck in my trunk and shoes on my feet. What’s the dealio? I think the first trick I am going to try and nail is the heel flip.
I fully support this…
